How To Deal With Allergies Cough

There are a number of causes for you to have allergies cough (and this list will sound very familiar among the allergy community): pollens, animal dandruff, molds, grass, mites and dust. Allergies cough is very similar to regular cough that comes with cold symptoms.

It is important to realize that coughing is the way your body is reacting to the things that you came in contact with, and your body is doing so to clear your respiratory tracts and lungs. So allergies cough might be annoying, but it might be a good thing for your body as well. Chrysanthemum, honey and chamomile are all good ingredients to make beverages that can smooth your throat of the itchiness from the coughs. You can find boxed drinks in drug stores or ask your pharmacists to recommend some drinks to do the trick.

Poison Ivy: Contagious Or Not?

Is poison ivy contagious? Yes and no.

That itchy rash that all of us are familiar with is actually created by a substance on the surface of the poison ivy leaves. A person’s skin comes into contact with this substance (a resin), and over the next 2 to 3 days the area of contact develops red bumps and rashes.

So is poison ivy contagious? Partly no because you cannot develop those bumps and rashes just by being in the presence of someone who have them. But if you come into contact with the resin on that person’s skin or clothing, then it is likely that you can develop those symptoms as well. So poison ivy is contagious in that sense.

The actual rash created by poison ivy will spread to other areas of your body if you are unaware of the resin’s presence and you spread it to other parts of your body with your hands or clothing.

What To do When You Have An Allergy Skin Rash

A number of things can cause an allergy skin rash to your body: sumac, mold, pets, poison ivy, poison oak, etc. An allergy skin rash is a very common allergic symptom, and usually isn’t fatal.

There are a number of ways to treat and sooth skin rashes caused by allergies.

Soaking in a warm bath is always a relaxing experience, especially when you have a skin rash. Try to use unscented soap and do not scrub or scratch your affected areas. Do not use water that is too hot; a little more than lukewarm is good. Keep your skin hydrated by putting on moisturizer to your rash area.

As mentioned above, do not scratch yourself even though it is very tempting to do so with the itchy skin. This will make matters worst. Wear some gloves to bed to prevent scratching in your sleep.

The last tip is to stay away from the sun as much as possible; keep yourself inside air conditioned environments, and use a humidifier whenever possible to hydrate your skin. This will make the skin less itchy and the allergy skin rash go away faster.

Severe Reaction To Allergies: Throat Swelling

Sometimes allergy symptoms are not life-threatening: eyes watering, itchy skin, runny nose. However sometimes the allergy symptoms are severe and need medical attention immediately, for example allergies asthma attacks and allergies throat swelling.

When a person’s throat swells, it is an indication that their throat is closing up. This affects breathing tremendously as it blocks the airways to the lungs. A swelling to the throat from allergies means that the body is not capable of dealing with the substance that it came in contact with.

Remember, throat swelling from allergies reaction is not only a severe allergic reaction, but also a severe medical emergency condition. Medical attention is required IMMEDIATELY. Do not hesitate to call for emergency help as every second is critical in the survival of the person affected.

  4. If oatmeal isn’t available, baking soda also works as poison ivy remedies. Mix some baking soda with water into a paste. Either apply it directly on your skin or add 1/2 cup to your bath and soak. This paste can also sooth insect bites itches.
  5. Ancient saying is that remedies often grow near the poison. In this case, the natural remedy is jewel weed; it grows near poison ivy. Jewel weed works very well in stopping poison ivy itching. Exploring the Best Alternative Therapies for Allergies

To identify the most promising alternative therapies for allergies and asthma, University of California researchers have read thousands of research papers on the use of complementary and alternative medicine. Since most of the papers did not meet the team's rigorous standards, they surveyed conventional doctors, alternative practitioners, and patients.

The researchers found that allergy patients were most likely to be interested in dietary changes and dietary supplements. So they decided to investigate vitamin C, magnesium, and about a dozen other supplements, including red grape extract, American ginseng, Siberian ginseng, goldenseal root, astragalus root, silymarin, bacopa, elderberries, shilajit, moomiyo, bovine thymus, and bovine colostrum.

In addition, they are investigating the allergy-fighting potential of foods such as yogurt, reishi and maitake mushrooms, wheat grass juice, various anti-inflammatory oils, and - attention, chocolate lovers - cocoa. Before you stock up on chocolate bars, though, consider that it might not be the chocolate itself that is helpful, but one of its many extracts.

The researchers are also evaluating mind-body therapies such as hypnosis, massage, and biofeedback.

So far, there have been some tantalizing preliminary results. For example, one small study showed that subjects who ate a cup of yogurt containing active starter cultures each day had 25 percent fewer colds and one-tenth as many allergy symptoms. This supports the hygiene hypothesis notion that probiotics, or "good" bugs, might help restore balance to our oversanitized gastrointestinal systems.

Unfortunately, there have been no announcements of any major breakthroughs. Setting up, conducting, and evaluating any given therapy in a way that can withstand the withering gaze of scientific scrutiny is a process that takes years.

Still, researchers are hopeful that some initially disappointing therapies will eventually prove to be winners. Among the most promising contenders is wheat grass juice, a pollen-rich concoction made from the tall Western grass that actors commonly chew in cowboy movies. Now a staple item at many juice bars, wheat grass juice is a rich source of antioxidants. Although initial trials have been disappointing, researchers still hope that it will prove to be a potent allergy fighter.

In general, experts believe that people with allergies and asthma shouldn't rely on any single food or supplement. They say it is healthier to adopt a varied diet rich in antioxidant foods and anti-inflammatory oils. Instead of gobbling vitamin C and vitamin A pills, for example, people with allergies and asthma might be better off eating more broccoli because it contains a wide variety of antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory compounds.

Although alternative strategies can work wonders, experts say that the goal should be to complement conventional therapy, not replace it. Allergists are especially reluctant to stop conventional treatments in patients with asthma. It's just too serious a disease. Since uncontrolled asthma can be life-threatening, doctors argue that it must be reined in with conventional treatments before complementary and alternative treatments are introduced.

Treating Allergies With Environmental Medicine

Like conventional allergists, environmental-medicine doctors place a premium on environmental control. Doctors preach having at least your bedroom as an oasis. You want a place where you can get a good night's sleep because that will often be enough to give you good health through the day when you are exposed to those things you react to. You have to reduce the total load.

Like conventional allergists, environmental-medicine doctors also use drugs and immunotherapy. However, for them, the balance is heavily tipped on the side of immunotherapy. However, for the, the balance is heavily tipped on the side of immunotherapy.

Still, drugs are sometimes a necessary evil, especially when the pollen is so thick that you can barely see out of your car windshield. On those kinds of days, anyone who is pollen-sensitive is going to have symptoms. That is why you need oral medications or inhalers.

Immunotherapy
Environmental medicine's approach to allergy shots is similar to that of conventional medicine. By taking a little "hair of the dog that bit you," you gradually retrain your immune system to tolerate substances that set it off. If you are lucky, the effect is permanent and you are essentially "cured."

The difference is that environmental-medicine doctors are able to use higher starting concentrations of the offending substance, which have been shown to bring more immediate and long-lasting symptom relief. Unlike conventional allergists, they also use allergy shots to treat food and chemical sensitivities.

Although conventional doctors do not claim that these higher concentrations are necessarily harmful, they believe that allergy shots are primarily useful for inhalant allergies - such as pollen and mold - and can be dangerous when used to treat food allergies.

Here are a couple of environmental medicine's forms of immunotherapy.

Enzyme-potentiated desensitization
This form of immunotherapy is used to desensitize patients to an entire category of allergens. For example, the aeroallergens category would include pollen, mold, and animal dander. Tiny injections of these allergens are given several weeks apart. Since doses are much weaker than other allergy shots, an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase is added to increase, or "potentiate," the effect.

Optimal-dose immunotherapy
The "optimal" does is just short of the dose that produces symptoms. By starting with higher concentrations, environmental-medicine doctors have shown that patients can complete a course of immunotherapy in as little as 2 years.

Additional Allergy Treatments

In addition to immunotherapy, the following treatments may also be used by environmental-medicine doctors.

Dietary changes
Great emphasis is placed on finding and eliminating foods in the diet that cross-react with other allergens, especially pollens. One example is eggs, which sometimes cause a double reaction in patients who are allergic to oak tree pollen. Practitioners often counsel their patients to cut back on or eliminate sugar, refined wheat, and dairy products, and they encourage eating a varied, organic diet.

Exercise
Most of us simply don't move enough. Probably 50 percent of all the symptoms are caused by insufficient physical movement. Most sufferers will acheive about half of the relief that is available to them simply by adding an hour of appropriate physical movement into their daily routine - even walking whenever possible.

Sauna therapy
Also known as heat depuration therapy, sauna therapy is often used to treat multiple chemical sensitivity, based on the knowledge that sweating releases toxins stored in fat. When supervised by a doctor, patients in the sauna are generally given vitamin, mineral, and fluid replacements.

Stress reduction
Since emotional upheaval can make allergies worse, environmental-medicine doctors often recommend supplemental mind and body therapies such as psychotherapy and massage. Getting rid of stress helps the whole system. If they follow a stress program that lowers the level of cumulative stresses, patients often get better, even without any additional lifestyle changes.

Supplements
The number of vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements that can be used for allergy is almost limitless. But some supplements come up over and over again in the medical literature. Among them are vitamin C, vitamin B6, zinc, and magnesium.

Nasal Irrigation

Nasal irrigation can relieve the nasal congestion and swelling common in allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. It washes debris from the nose and shrinks swollen mucous membranes. Irrigation with a simple saline solution has been found to immediately reduce histamine levels; these levels were maintained for at least 30 minutes after treatment in clinical trials on allergic rhinitis patients. Follow the directions below to perform your own nasal irrigation. You can repeat this process two or three times a day. Don't worry if you feel a mild burning sensation when you first start nasal irrigations - it will diminish after a few days. If you're using nasally administered medications, irrigate before using inhalers.
  • Wash a one-quart glass jar thoroughly and fill it one quart of purified water. Add 2-3 heaping tablespoons of pickling/canning salt (not table salt) and one teaspoon of baking soda (pure bicarbonate). Stir before each use; cap and store at room temperature. For children, use 1.5 teaspoons of salt and gradually increase to 2-3 teaspoons so as not to irritate their nasal passages. The solution keeps for one week.
  • Pour some of the solution into a clean bowl. You may warm it slightly in the microwave but do not heat until too hot.
  • Using a bulb ear syringe, large medical syringe (30 cc), or a Water Pik device, squirt solution into each nostril, making sure that you aim toward the back of the head not the top of the head. It's best to stand over a sink or even in the shower. Some of the salt-water solution may get into your mouth; spit it out. Swallowing a little of the solution is not harmful.
  • For children, you can use a nasal steroid container or other spray bottle and squirt the solution repeatedly into each nostril. Let the child sit or stand up during the irrigation - don't force them to lie down.
Nasal Hyperthermia (Vapor Inhalation)
Inhalation of heated water vapor is a folk remedy for allergic rhinitis that has been proven to be clinically effective in reducing congestion and histamine levels for up to four hours following treatment. Vaporizers can heat water to various degrees; between 41 degrees C and 43 degrees C is the optimal temperature for vapor therapy. In one study, 30 rhinitis patients underwent three hyperthermic treatments in three weeks, in which they spent 20 minutes inhaling vapor from water heated to 43 degrees C; 20 minutes inhaling vapor from water heated to 41 degrees C, and nasal irrigation. All patients experienced symptom relief from the vapor systems but not from the nasal irrigation; 41 degrees C was the more comfortable temperature.

Common Homeopathic Remedies For Asthma: Part 1

There are many remedies that can be effective in treating allergic reactions, depending upon the type of allergy, time and location of reaction, affinity for warmth or cold, and emotional state. If a remedy is well suited for your condition, your will experience immediate improvement or, in some cases, a healing crisis (a brief worsening of symptoms followed by improvement). If symptoms persist, however, it indicates an incorrect potency, dosage, or remedy, or perhaps deeper underlying problems. As with all medicinal substances, one should be cautious in self-prescribing homeopathic remedies and seek professional medical advice before beginning a homeopathic course of treatment. The standard recommended dose for each of the remedies is three tablets of 6C or 30C every four hours until you see improvement. Repeat dosage if symptoms reappear. Be sure to follow the directions on the product labels.
  • Ammonium carbobicum: Indicated for severe asthma, accompanied by exhausted breathing, shortness of breath when wheezing, bronchial constriction and congestion, difficulty in expectorating, burning in chest, cough with palpitations, slow labored breathing, bubbling sounds, lung swelling, and slimy sputum with specks of blood. Homeopathy for Allergies - Not a "Placebo Effect"

As with many alternative therapies, conventional medicine has been hasty to dismiss the beneficial results of homeopathy as "placebo effect" - that is, that relief was psychosomatically induced, much as people experience symptomatic relief from placebos used in clinical studies. However, recent research has shown that homeopathy is effective - and not because of the patients' belief in the modality.

In one study, 20 steroid-dependent asthma patients were administered a subcutaneous treatment of a commercial homeopathic combination remedy every five to seven days while 20 others received a placebo. The homeopathy-treated group was able to reduce their steroid use by 100%, while the placebo group was not. The researchers concluded that the homeopathic remedy may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the respiratory system. A similar study examining the effects of a combination homeopathic preparation called Traumeel S (from Heel/BHI) on 103 steroid-dependent asthma. All homeopathic-treated patients were able to considerably reduce their medication while experiencing significant improvements in muscle power and sense of well-being. The placebo-treated group enjoyed no such benefits.

Several studies have proven the efficacy of Galphimia glauca in treating eye and nasal symptoms (pollinosis) of hay fever. In one, 201 patients with pollinosis were either give Galphimia glauca or a placebo. After two weeks, 65% of the homeopathic group experienced significant improvement or cure of eye symptoms and 66% of nasal symptoms cleared. In the placebo group, 44% had relief from eye symptoms and 44% from nasal symptoms. After five weeks, there was a 77% improvement in the homeopathic group for all symptoms compared to only 51% in the placebo group.

Homeopathy has also been shown to be effective in reducing the pain and relapse of ear infections. In a 1997 study, 103 children with acute otitis media were prescribed single homeopathic remedies, while 28 were treated with conventional antibiotics. The homeopathic-treated group experienced pain relief in an average of two days (compared to three days in the antibiotic group). At the end of the treatment, 70.7% of the children in the homeopathic group were free from recurrence a year after treatment, with only 56.5% free in the antibiotic group. The maximum number of recurrent infections in the remainder of the homeopathic group was three; the maximum in the antibiotic group was six.

Homeopathic Remedies: Building the Totality of Symptoms

The main symptoms profile includes physical complaints, the effect of motion and temperature on pain, food cravings, and personality or emotional disposition. In homeopathy, the subjective quality of how a pain "feels" is extremely useful in identifying a remedy. When pursuing homeopathic treatment, pay attention to your pain and try to match it to the following categories:
  • Sharp: stabbing, cutting, stitching, piercing, pricking, splinter-like, stinging
  • Shooting: radiates from one location to another
  • Stiff: constricted or contracted
  • Pressing: squeezing, compression, crushing, pinching
  • Changeable: wandering in any direction or is hard to locate
  • Burning: cold or hot needles
  • Lame: dislocated, broken, sprained, or paralytic area
  • Other types of pain: throbbing or pulsating, digging, twisting, drawing, pulling
Frequency and duration of symptoms are also important. Do they occur regularly at a particular time or in correlation with the weather? Do they come on strongly and persist for only a short time? Physical signs are also part of the patient profile. The affected areas may be swollen and discolored (red, white, pale, waxy, or bruised), or hot or cold to the touch. Homeopaths also consider what aggravates the condition. It is unusual for many Americans to consider that their emotional disposition factors into their physical ailments, but in homeopathy, these qualities are as important as the location and duration of pain. Homeopaths look for the following emotional patterns: restlessness, irritability, quick to overreact, or cries easily. A strong desire for rest or remaining still, a constant need for motion or activity, desire to be outdoors, or fear of crowds help construct the personality profile.

Introduction to Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic medicine, established in Germany in the 18th century, is based on three principles: like cures like (Law of Similars); the more a remedy is diluted, the greater its potency (Law of Infinitesimal Dose); and an illness is specific to the individual (a holistic medical model). Prescribing considers all of an individual's symptoms and signs. Disease can be permanently and rapidly reversed by using a medicine that is capable of producing (in the human system) the most similar and complete symptoms of the disease in a healthy person. Each homeopathic medicine is "proven" or tested in healthy people and their symptoms recorded. When treating ill patients, a homeopathic practitioner matches the patient's symptoms with a remedy that produced similar symptoms in a healthy person when "proven".

Treating "like with like" works effectively to reverse disease because the homeopathic remedy works on an energetic level (having been diluted to the point that no chemical components remain). It is found that the more a substance was diluted and shaken, the higher its potency. Homeopathic remedies are prepared in a series of dilution steps using water and succussing (vigorous shaking). Potency levels are designated with "X" and "C". The "X" means that the homeopathic remedy has been serially diluted on a 1:10 scale (one part substance to nine parts water) and the "C" means the remedy has been diluted on a 1:100 scale (one part substance to 99 parts water). A number value is placed before the scale designator to identify how many dilutions the remedy has undergone. A remedy designated "6X" has undergone six dilutions at one part substance to nine parts water; a remedy that is designated "12X" has undergone 12 dilutions and is stronger than the 6X remedy. Common potencies available over-the-counter are 6X, 12X, 30X, 6C, 12C, and 30C. Lower potencies tend to have a greater effect on the physical plane, while higher potencies affect the mental/emotional plane.

Classical homeopathic remedies are prescribed for a patient based on each person's unique and distinguishing symptoms. This individualized prescription considers not only the physical symptoms but also the mental and emotional states as well. This is vastly different from conventional medicine, which will generally give one medicine to every patient for a specific disease condition. In homeopathy, any number of homeopathic remedies could be prescribed for that condition, but a specific remedy can be identified after reviewing the patient's individual symptoms.

Beware of Asthma Drugs

Although some of the frequently prescribed asthma drugs can be life-saving in an emergency, overuse or long-term use of most asthma medications can produce severe side effects. Oral corticosteroids, such as prednisone, may over a period of time increase a patient's risk for osteoporosis, diabetes, immune depression, adrenal suppression, cataracts, facial swelling, candidiasis, and a loss of minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium, among other problems. Inhaled cortisone may also have serious side effects. In one study, taking inhaled corticosteroids in quantities of over 1.6 mg per day for three months significantly increased the risk of glaucoma or ocular hypertension in elderly patients.

There is also strong evidence that long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids can slow growth in asthmatic children, as cortisone drugs reduce collagen synthesis in children. This can occur with doses of beclomethasone at 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) or more daily, or budesonide at 800 micrograms (0.8 mg) or more daily. Fluticasone appears to be without adverse effects on growth when used in conventional doses but may have adverse effects when used in higher doses. It is not known at this time whether this growth suppression ultimately affects final adult height.

Inhaled cortisone can also suppress normal adrenal function and cause excessive weight gain; in clinical studies, 0.5 mg of fluticasone per day caused depleted cortisol levels and increased weight gain. Corticosteriods are also implicated in increased risk for osteoporosis or bone loss, since these drugs hamper absorption or magnesium and calcium, minerals necessary for strong bones.

Theophylline, which is related to chemicals found in coffee and chocolate and stimulates the heart and central nervous system can help a patient through a difficult period but can easily reach toxic levels, and is dangerous to anyone with a liver disorder. Additionally, it has been linked to the onset of learning disorders and nervousness.

Of even more concern today, however, may be studies showing an increased death rate from the use and misuse of the beta-agonist sprays. According to a 1992 report published in The New England Journal of Medicine, a pattern of increasing use over time is an important predictor of serious or fatal asthma attacks, as is doubling your monthly use, increasing your usage by one canister a month, or inhaling a total of more than one-and-a-half canisters per month. As to the latest symptom relievers for asthma (the anti-leukotriene, anti-IgE, anti-cytokine, and anti-platelet-activating products), further research is needed.
