Poison Ivy: Contagious Or Not?

Is poison ivy contagious? Yes and no.

That itchy rash that all of us are familiar with is actually created by a substance on the surface of the poison ivy leaves. A person’s skin comes into contact with this substance (a resin), and over the next 2 to 3 days the area of contact develops red bumps and rashes.

So is poison ivy contagious? Partly no because you cannot develop those bumps and rashes just by being in the presence of someone who have them. But if you come into contact with the resin on that person’s skin or clothing, then it is likely that you can develop those symptoms as well. So poison ivy is contagious in that sense.

The actual rash created by poison ivy will spread to other areas of your body if you are unaware of the resin’s presence and you spread it to other parts of your body with your hands or clothing.
