Chinese Medicine Internal Treatment For Allergic Rhinitis

Main Symptoms
Paroxysmal nasal itching, soreness, distension, sneezing and a great amount of nasal mucus which is clear and watery in consistency, intermittent greyish white nasal obstruction and the possible accompaniment of fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, disinclination to speak, loss of appetite, loose stools, fear of cold and chilled limbs, back pain, frequent night-time urination, a pale red tongue with thin, white fur and a fine pulse.

Treatment principles
Fortify the spleen and boost the qi, scatter cold and open the portals or orifices (i.e. clear the nostrils of mucus).

Prescription for internal treatment
Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Centre and Boost the Qi Decoction) plus Cang Er Zi San (Xanthium Powder).

  • 18 g Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huang Qi)
  • 9 g Radix Panacis Ginseng (Ren Shen)
  • 9 g Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui)
  • 9 g Fructus Xanthii Sibirici (Cang Er Zi)
  • 9 g Flos Magnoliae Liliflorae (Xin Yi)
  • 9 g Herba Menthae Haplocalycis (Bo He)
  • 9 g Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma)
  • 9 g Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chen Pi)
  • 9 g Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Bai Zhu)
  • 9 g Mix-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao)
  • 9 g Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu)
  • 15 g Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Bai Zhi)
The above quantities make up one day's dosage, to be decocted in water. This formula is for treatment during an acute attack. Then, depending on the individual patient's pattern and symptoms, this basic formula is modified with various additions and subtractions.

If lung qi vacuity is marked, increase the dose of Radix Astragali to 30 g/l oz and add 9 g Radix Ledebouriellae Divaricatae (Fang Feng).

If there is simultaneous abdominal distension and loose stools, add 15 g per 1/2 oz Semen Dolichoris Lablab (Bai Bian Dou), and 18 g Semen Coicis Lachryma-jobi (Yi Yi Ren).

If there is lower back pain and frequent night-time urination, add 6 g Rhizoma Curculiginis Orchioidis (Xian Mao) and 6 g Radix Lateralis Praeparatus Aconiti Carmichaeli (Fu Zi) or also administer Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Golden Cabinet Kidney Qi Pills).

If the soft tissue inside the nose is swollen, add 15 g per 1/2 oz Radix Rubrus Paeoniae Lactiflorae (Chi Shao), 9 g Radix Ligustici Wallichii (Chuan Xiong) and 9 g Fructus Liquidambaris Taiwaniae (Lu Lu Tong).

If the amount of clear nasal mucus is profuse, add 9 g Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis (Wu Wei Zi), 9 g Fructus Pruni Mume (Wu Mei) and 3 g Herba Asari Cum Radice (Xi Xin).
