Pharmaceutical medications are often the first step of allergy treatment in a conventional medical setting. However, research shows that antihistamines, cortisone, and other frequently prescribed allergy drugs have many adverse consequences.
Antihistamines drugs, both topical and oral, are the most commonly prescribed and administered allergy medication. They block some if not all of the histamine released during an allergic reaction; histamine does not cause allergic reactions but it does incite such classic allergy symptoms as runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and itchy skin. While antihistamine drugs generally relieve these symptoms, they have numerous drawbacks. Among the side effects of regular dose of antihistamines are drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination, fatigue, blurred or double vision, mood changes, delusions, hallucinations, insomnia, constipation or diarrhea, urinary frequency or difficulty, coughing, palpitations, tightness in the chest, headache, and tingling or weakness in the hands. Birth defects have also been linked to the use of antihistamines by pregnant women.
A recent study found that standard doses of allergy drugs containing the antihistamine diphenhydramine (as found in Benadryl) may impair people’s ability to safely drive more than alcohol (because of drowsiness). Another antihistamine commonly prescribed for allergies, astemizole (Hismanal), can have possible adverse side effects on the cardiac system. Sedating histamines (such as Benadryl, Tavist, ChlorTrimeton, Zyrtec, Atarax) may have various adverse effects, such as headaches, nervousness, anxiety, blurred vision, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, urinary retention, and cardiovascular problems including palpitations, arrhythmias, and hypertension. Moreover, antihistamines have a dramatic impact on childhood learning ability. In one study, children who took diphenhydramine-containing drugs such as Benadryl for hay fever scored approximately ten points (45 points out of 60) lower than children who did not (54 points out of 60) on a test.
