Natural Allergy Cures

Every day, millions of Americans are unaware that they are using potentially harmful ingredients on and in their bodies, all in the name of personal hygiene. Mouthwash, toothpaste, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath, shaving gels and creams, deodorants, feminine products, cosmetics, perfumes, and nail polishes all contain known environmental toxins and irritants. Among the most dangerous is sodium lauryl sulfate (also known as sodium laureth or lauryl sulfate), which can dry out the skin; in fact, this chemical is used in clinical studies to disrupt skin barrier function. It also may damage children's teeth, disrupt the endocrine system, and lead to eye problems and cataracts, among other disorders. Another detrimental chemical is bentonite or kaolin, which may act as a suffocating barrier to the skin. (This chemical is also found in many bowel detoxification formulas.) Most perfumes, aftershave lotions, deodorants, hand lotions, shampoos, hair dyes, hair sprays contain phenols. Many feminine hygiene products, including tampons and sanitary pads, outgas formaldehyde and can contain other dangerous toxins, such as bleaches.

Many cosmetics and skin-care products also contain glycerin. This chemical occurs naturally in any foods from which oil can be extracted. Synthetic derivatives are used in many foods as a preservative, since it prevents moisture loss, but it is also used in personal-care products for these properties. External use of glycerin-containing products, however, is detrimental to skin barrier function, because the chemical draws moisture from the skin's underlying tissues to keep the surface moist, ultimately damaging the barrier integrity.
