Clothes Cleaning For People With Allergies

Natural Allergy Cures

For people with allergies, there are two main considerations when it comes to doing the laundry. The first concerns symptoms (respiratory or skin) that are made worse by contact with mite allergen; the second concerns eczema, dermatitis, or urticaria that caused or made worse by some washing products.

House-dust mites can survive washing temperatures up to 56ºC/133ºF. Although the mite allergen will be washed out at lower temperatures, the mites themselves will cling to the fabric using suckers on their feet. This is why all bed linen (sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers, and so on) should be made of cotton, which is washable at the temperatures needed to kill the mites outright.

Alternatively, you can add a dilute benzyl benzoate solution to a lower-temperature wash water used for bed linen. The benzyl benzoate kills mites, which are then washed out along with the allergen. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding quantities to use.

Benzyl benzoate is generally considered to be safe, but little is known about its effects when used long-term as an acaricide. If you do use it for cleaning bed linen or clothes, you may want to program your washing machine to give extra rinses. Alternatively, you could replace your bed linen with cotton items and reserve the benzyl benzoate for use with items, such as curtain, that are not in constant, close skin contact.

By a process of trial and error most allergic people discover which washing product best suits their skin condition. Whichever it is, try not to use too much, and rinse thoroughly to avoid any potentially irritating residues. If you are experimenting with different products to discover which ones are suitable, remember to rinse your washing machine out thoroughly to remove all traces of the previous one. It is also wise to try any new product on just one or two items first, particularly if the allergic person has very sensitive skin.

Biological washing products contain enzymes to break down proteins, such as milk or blood, that cause stains. People with eczema may find that their skin condition is made worse by exposure to these enzymes (which may also cause respiratory symptoms), and often find non-biological products more acceptable. However, if these also cause irritation, then products labelled as suitable for "sensitive skin" may be a better option, or you could even try old-fashioned soap flakes. Sensitivity to every type of washing product is rare, but if this should occur, try using one tablespoon of washing soda, sodium bicarbonate, or borax per washing load. Another option is a laundry ball, a chemical-free alternative to detergents.

A few people with eczema can tolerate fabric conditioners, but many sufferers find that the perfume they contain irritates their condition. If this is the case, use a quarter cup of baking soda, vinegar, or borax instead.

Many brans of stain remover contain solvent-type irritant chemicals - often indicated by the manufacturer's precautions concerning their use. In addition, they are often highly fragranced. Simple home-made stain removers, based on vinegar, club soda, or corn starch, can be just as effective as these stronger commercial brands.

Grass Pollens Allergy

Natural Allergy Cures

Pollens that are produced by grass are generally more common than tree pollens, and grass pollinosis (the technical name for hay fever) affects a larger percentage of the population than three pollinosis. The grass family (Poaceae) is extremely large, with more than 10000 species worldwide. About 1000 of these are distributed throughout the USA and only 400 in Europe. The grasses of lowland meadows tend to produce more pollen than those of poor soils. Grass pollen are too large to enter the lower airways, and so they are more often the cause of nose and eye problems rather than asthma. The common grasses that are associated with hay fever are:
  • Alopecurus (Foxtail)
  • Anthoxanthum (Vernal)
  • Arrhenatherum (Oat grass)
  • Cornus (Dogstail)
  • Festuca (Fescue)
  • Lolium (Rye)
  • Phleum (Timothy)
  • Poa (Meadow)
Grass pollens can be detected high up in the atmosphere and several kilometres out to sea and so are widely dispersed. As a result, local efforts to control levels are generally futile. Hay fever still occurs in cities even though areas of grassland are far fewer than in rural areas.

In cities, depending on the prevailing wind conditions and local geography, hay-fever attacks tend to peak one or two days after release of the pollens takes place in the countryside. Interestingly, the heat generated by cities keeps pollens airborne, so that ground-level measures of pollens are lower than in the country. However, this is not all good news, since the interaction of the pollens with city pollution leads to symptoms occurring at relatively low allergen levels.

Treating Allergy Using Acupuncture

Natural Allergy Cures

Acupuncture is an integrated healing system developed by the Chinese over 5000 years ago. The treatment is administered by an acupuncturist using hair-thin, strainless-steel needles, generally pre-sterilized and disposable; these are lightly inserted into the skin at any of more than 1000 locations on the body's surface, known as acupoints. Acupoints are places where qi can be accessed by acupuncturists to reduce, enhance, or redirect its flow. These acupoints exist on meridians, the body's specific pathways for the flow of energy. In most cases, these energy pathways relate to individual organs or organ systems, designated as Lung, Small Intestine, Heart, and others. Acupuncture is employed for a wide variety of conditions, including pain relief, arthritis, migraines, allergy, and asthma.

Conventional medicine has been slow to accept that this millennia-old therapy is effective, primarily because, until recently, there has been a lack of well-designed clinical studies testing acupuncture. However, in the past decade, dozens of placebo-controlled studies have asthma, allergic rhinitis, hives, arthritis, even chemical sensitivity, among other disorders. In fact, regular courses of acupuncture have shown to be long-term preventatives against allergy flare-ups. In one study, acupuncture was significantly more effective than conventional immunotherapy in preventing relapses of symptoms in 143 patients with IgE-mediated allergies (asthma, allergic rhinitis, and hives).

Central Vacuum Cleaners

Natural Allergy Cures

A cleaning system of this type, which is a popular feature in some countries, consists of a suction unit and dust-collecting bag or bin placed in a basement, utility room, garage, or understairs closet. To use the system, you plug a long, flexible hose into strategically placed sockets, and the dust is transported via narrow ducting hidden in the building's structure to the collecting bag or bin. Because the motor unit and dust receptacle are stationary, they can be far larger and provide more powerful suction than any portable cleaner.

Central vacuum cleaners are easy to maintain and operate, especially since a lightweight hose is all you need to carry around your home. The collecting bag or bin of domestic units needs emptying about every 6 to 12 months - although an allergy sufferer should avoid doing this.

Most central vacuum cleaners are vented cleaners are preferable for those with allergies, as the air pulled into the vacuum cleaner will then go straight outside, so eliminating any concern that undesirable allergens can escape back into the living space.

Central vacuum cleaners can be fitted into a home quite easily after it has been built. Rather than being run up inside the walls, the ducting that connects the sockets is usually run up inside a cupboard (often an understairs cupboard). Only two sockets are needed for most homes (one upstairs and one downstairs) because of the length (about 30m/98ft) of the hose which can normally stretch the length of the house if the sockets are placed in the centre of the home.

Proper Food Combining

Natural Allergy Cures

If your food allergies/sensitivities are caused by poor digestion, which allows food molecules to escape the gut barrier, proper food combining may help restore healthy digestion. The general rule, according to Patrick Donovan, N.D., of Cancer Centers of America, in Seattle, Washington, is that proteins and carbohydrates are never eaten at the same time (rice is an exception). Proteins may be eaten with non-starchy vegetables; carbohydrates (grains, starchy vegetables) may be eaten with all vegetables as well as legumes. Fruits must be eaten alone, usually as a snack; the same is true with dairy products.

"The rational for this approach is the difference in digestion tome for various food groups," Dr. Donovan explains. "Digestion is optimal if foods eaten together have roughly the same digestion time." Many alternative medicine practitioners have found that food combining helps patients avoid gas, belching, and bloating, which is often caused when sugars (carbohydrates) ferment in the gut because the stomach is busy processing fats. However, some studies have shown that food combining isn't necessarily effective - certain foods may still not be properly absorbed, even if you follow the combining rules. Once again, the efficacy of this diet depends on individual response and various biochemical factors. Your doctor can help you decide whether this may be an effective therapy for your condition.

How Chinese Medicine Views the Liver and Allergies

Natural Allergy Cures

TCM stresses that an allergy-free and healthy body often depends on a balanced liver. The liver, a yin organ, controls tendons, keeps the qi moving throughout the body, and stores blood. Its yang partner is the gallbladder, which stores and excretes bile, protects the nervous system from overreaction, and helps stabilize emotions. When the liver is congested (made more yang) from eating yang (heating) foods or overloading the body with toxins, the gallbladder's function is likewise impeded, and symptoms of allergies may manifest.

One day, on a hike, Stan, a 39-year-old computer engineer, inadvertently came in contact with poison ivy. He was unaware of the fact until, two days later, when he broke out in a rash, accompanied by uncomfortable itching (allergic contact dermatitis).

Stan tried to relieve the symptoms by taking an over-the-counter antihistamine, Beneadryl. This lessened the itching, but the rash continued to get worse. By the time he consulted acupuncturist Ira J. Golchehreh, L.Ac., O.M.D., of San Rafael, California, six days after exposure, he hard large, red, raised blisters all over his body, particularly on his abdomen, thighs, and groin.

Dr. Golchehreh discovered that Stan had a history of severe allergies as well as signs of a liver imbalance, which manifested on an emotional level as occasional angry outbursts. According to TCM, this indicates a "hyperactivity of liver yang," explains Dr. Golchehreh, or liver whose energy, or "fire," is so overreactive (yang) that it creates problems throughout the body and mind. Poison ivy, too, is a manifestation of too much heat, says Dr. Golchehreh, "and the boils are considered an infection of poison in teh organs."

The first order of business was to remove the heat from Stan's system so that the toxic manifestation would be eliminated. Dr. Golchehreh used acupuncture to redirect qi imbalances and allow the poisons to drain from his system. Additionally, he gave Stan the Chinese herbs Bupleurum schizonepeta (commonly used to treat hives) and Gypsum fibrosum (calcium sulfate) to help disperse the heat and removethe toxins from his system. Stan also moistened the Gypsum fibrosum powder with water to make a paste and applied it topically to cool the lesions. Another remedy in TCM that rebalances the liver is a combination of the herbs Tang-Kuei and Gardenia (3 g, three times a day, between meals).

"I recommended that Stan drink cooling drinks and eat ice cream to cool down his body temperature," Dr. Golchehreh says. "When you have blisters that have become inflamed, it indicates too much heat on the surface of the body and the best thing is to cool down the system with something cold." Applying ice to the skin can also be beneficial for poison ivy symptoms.

Since poison ivy often lingers for weeks, Stan was greated relieved to find that 48 hours after his visit to Dr. Golchehreh, all traces of his allergic contact dermatitis had disappeared.

Useful Supplements For Allergies

Natural Allergy Cures

Digestive Enzymes

These can help break down undigested food components such as proteins. They consist of hydrochloric acid and pepsin, normally present in the stomach, and pancreatic enzymes normally present in the duodenum and small intestines. An alternative is to eat more raw food, as the enzymes in the food will not have been destroyed by cooking.

Probiotics
These are a way of recolonizing good bacteria that may have been destroyed by drugs or poor diet. If harmful bacteria are allowed to take over, it can lead to conditions such as candidiasis. However, care needs to be taken in choosing a good quality supplement that contains Lactobacillis acidophilus and Bifidobacterium, either separately or together. Capsules should be brought in vacuum-sealed bottles and, once opened, kept in the refrigerator.

Soluble Fiber
This helps to speed up the transport of food through the intestines. The longer poorly digested food stays in the gut, the more likely it is to cause problems. Fiber also helps to clean the walls of the intestines. The best sources are oat bran, rice bran, pectin, and physillium husks.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
These are vital for the immune system, for the health and protection of the gastro-intestinal mucosa are omega-3 (alpha linolenic acid) and omega-6 (linoleic acid). Flaxseed oil is one of the best and richest sources of omega-3. This is also present in soy bean, walnut, and wheat germ oils. Omega-6 EFAs are found in sesame seed oil, safflower, sunflower, corn, and evening primrose oil. These oils should be unrefined and cold pressed and kept refrigerated once opened, as oils can become rancid quite quickly and in this state they can affect the body adversely. Deficiency can result in stunted growth, hair loss, varicose veins, brittle nails, sexual immaturity, nervousness, and skin disorders - especially eczema and dandruff.

Minerals and Multivitamins
These may be necessary, as it is increasingly difficult to obtain all the necessary amounts from foods alone.

Antioxidants
These include vitamins A, C, E; selenium, zinc, L-Cysteine and L-Glutathione. Apart from being important nutrients, these vitamins and minerals protect cells against harmful free radicals. A free radical is an atom or molecule with an unpaired electron. It can be extremely damaging because it attempts to pair its free electron with an electron from neighboring molecules and can then set up a chain reaction causing damage to further cells. This "latching on" process is called oxidation and can "rust" the body almost as it does metal. Free radicals form because people are being exposed to thousands of substances, alien to the human body, such as atmospheric, pollution, radiation, pesticides, additives, tobacco, alcohol, hard physical exercise, and many forms of medicines. Unsaturated fats, which are found naturally in cell membranes, are particularly susceptible to free radical damage. The cell walls then become vulnerable to cancer, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, premature aging, and other diseases.

Breast-Feed Your Infant To Decrease Their Likelihood For Allergies: Part 2

Natural Allergy Cures

Most researchers and medical experts have found that children who are breast-fed for at least six months or more experience greater health benefits and fewer episodes of common childhood illnesses, such as ear infections, than do children who are not breast-fed or are breast-fed for less than four months. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be breast-fed for six to 12 months. The academy suggests that parents can begin to introduce age-specific solid to the child at age six months but the child should continue nursing for at least the first year of life.

If the mother has allergies or sensitivities, breast-feeding alone will not protect a newborn from developing allergies. Mothers can inadvertently pass food antigens and their associated antibodies to their children through nursing or even prior to birth through the wall of the placenta. Antibodies to cow's milk protein, a common trigger of atopic eczema, were detected in breast milk samples taken by German researchers in a study at the Universitats-Kinderklinik in Wien, Germany. The researchers found that infants produced the same type of antibodies to cow's milk that their mothers did even if the children's diet consisted solely of breast milk. But, the researchers found, if foods that trigger an immune response in the mother are avoided both during pregnancy and lactation, infants experience a lower incidence of sensitivity to cow's milk and thus a lower incidence of atopic eczema than infants whose mothers were on an unrestricted diet.

The most common allergy-producing foods are cow's milk, peanuts, eggs, wheat, soy, chicken, turkey, beef and pork. A study appearing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that exclusive breast-feeding and elimination of peanut, egg, fish, and dairy products from the mother's diet during lactation reduced the occurrence of food sensitivity in the infant. James Braly, M.D., author of Dr. Braly's Food Allergy and Nutrition Revolution, recommends that women predisposed to allergies discover what foods they are allergic to before pregnancy and eliminate them from their diet. They should then breast-feed their babies without consuming dairy products for a minimum of six months while still refraining from the foods they are allergic to. According to a French study, eliminating only cow's milk from the mother's diet did not result in reduced allergic episodes. Elimination of two to four foods, however, did prove sufficient.

Breast-Feed Your Infant To Decrease Their Likelihood For Allergies: Part 1

Natural Allergy Cures

One of the best ways to decrease the likelihood of developing allergies later in life, according to most alternative medicine practitioners, is to feed an infant mother's milk. Breast-feeding builds a strong immune system equipped to deal with infection, environmental toxins, and food allergens. Lendon Smith, M.D., a pediatrician in Portland, Oregon, and author of numerous books on children's health, emphasizes that nursing contributes to the child having fewer allergies. He states, "If babies are given anything other than breast milk in the first few months of life, food sensitivities may develop. Their intestines are not meant to digest anything other than breast milk. The immature cells lining the intestines will allow foreign food particles to pass through undigested. These bits are antigenic [material that causes immune reactions] and may set up an allergenic or antibody response that the child will never outgrow."

A recent Finnish study revealed that breast-feeding in infancy lowered the risk of allergic symptoms by one-third in children by the age 17. In another study, high-risk (atopic) infants were less likely to develop allergic eczema if they were breast-fed for more than four months. In addition, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal reports that babies who are breast-fed during their first six months of life have a significantly lower risk of developing childhood asthma.

Human breast milk contains nutrients that are easily digested contribute to healthy brain development and growth, and provide immunity to infectious agents that the mother (and also the infant) will encounter in their environment. In building an infant's immune system, breast milk acts on many levels. It contains anti-inflammatory substances that infants cannot manufacture on their own; stimulates the production of IgA, which can neutralize a substance foreign to the body before it becomes an allergen; and populates the child's immature intestinal barrier with beneficial microflora, which blocks the growth of disease-causing bacteria. A protein called lactoferrin - which makes up 20% of the total protein in human colostrum (breast milk secreted immediately after delivery) - seems to have an inhibitory effect on "unfriendly" bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia colo, and Helicobacter pylori, all of which are increasingly identified as contributing to numerous health problems, including allergies. According to researchers at the Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research in Shanghai, China, breast-fed, full-term children had healthier intestinal bacteria than formula-fed infants. Furthermore, their findings supported the claim that factors in breast milk prevent intestinal pathogens from developing.

Getting Rid Of Dust Mites And Mould In Carpets

Natural Allergy Cures

Wet Washing

Domestic carpet washing machines may remove mites and allergen along with dirt, but may ultimately result in more mites as the water left at the base of the carpet pile or in the carpet underlay greatly increases humidity, thus encouraging mite numbers and the growth of mould. However, professional carpet washing is usually very efficient at removing the water used and the carpet should be dry out quickly, provided there is good ventilation.

Dry cleaning
Solvents are sprayed directly on to the carpet or rug to loosen the dirt, which is then removed using a second solution containing ionizers. Optical brighteners and other chemicals such as deodorizers may be added. Dry cleaning kills mites but some people with allergies may find the process has an irritant effect on their symptoms. It may be necessary to stay away during professional cleaning and to air the house well afterwards.

Dry powder solvents are an alternative to wet solvents. These are sprinkled on to lightly dampened carpets and left for a short time to absorb the dirt before being vacuumed off. It can be difficult, even using a powerful vacuum cleaner, to remove all the powder, which may then be left behind to irritate the skin or airways of sensitive individuals.

Anti-mite chemicals
These aim to kill mites or neutralize mite allergen (so it no longer causes an allergic reaction) but used alone do not reduce allergic symptoms.

Steam treatment
Several steam methods kill dust mites, but not all neutralize mite allergen. One newly developed method boils ordinary tapwater (piped water) under pressure to produce very hot steam, which then penetrates deep into the pile to kill mites. There is evidence to show this method denatures mite allergen. As the steam contains very little water, it is sometimes described as "dry" steam. Afterward, the dead mites and allergen are vacuumed away. Steam treatment may be used to treat fabric upholstery and curtains as well, but should be tested on a small area first to make sure the carpet or fabric is not affected by the process.

Soft furnishings
Fabric-covered furnishings provide the perfect environment for mites and should be replaced with leather or vinyl coverings, which can be wiped down with a damp cloth weekly to remove dust and mites. Being realistic, it is likely that you will have some fabric-covered furnishings, even if only a few scatter cushions (pillows). Ready-made anti-mite barrier covers are available for pillows and bedding, and these can be adapted for sofas (couches) and armchairs.

Allergic to Cosmetics

Natural Allergy Cures

An allergic contact reaction involves an immune response to a chemical in the cosmetic, which is most likely to be a preservative of some type. Contact dermatitis occurs where the skin has come into contact with an allergen; a secondary spread may occur if you then touch other parts of your body with hands contaminated with that allergen.

Preservatives are among the most potent allergens found in cosmetics, with the best preservatives often making the strongest allergens.

The chemicals used to make fragrances are another common source of allergens. About 10 percent of people investigated of eczema-like skin conditions are found to be sensitive to fragrances. Other cosmetic allergens include hair dyes and the resin found in nail varnish.

Choosing a product
In general, cosmetics are relatively simple formulations modified with "extras" for marketing. There are many well-priced, non-fragranced products suitable for sensitive skins. Bear in mind that a well-marketed, expensive product is not necessarily a well-tolerated one. If you are choosing a product for an eczema sufferer, manufacturers may provide samples.

Problems With Basement Rooms

Natural Allergy Cures

A basement is most often converted into a utility room. If you want to use this space as a laundry area, install an extractor (exhaust) fan to exhaust excess moisture. Tumble driers should always be vented to the outside, no matter what room they are installed in. Some heat-recovery devices are available that recirculate hot air from the dryer back into the house. However, they are not recommended, since they are unlikely to filter out sufficiently very fine airborne particles.

There is always a possibility of a washing machine leaking or a freezer defrosting, causing some degree of flooding. To forestall problems, the floor of a basement utility room should incorporate a drain to remove any water spills that may occur. If a flood does occur, use a portable dehumidifier to help dry it out.

Boilers or furnaces are sometimes located in basements. A balanced-flue gas boiler ensures that the air used for combustion is drawn from the outside, rather than from inside the room, and that all the flue gases are exhausted outside. This eliminates the need for extra ventilation and relieves you of any worry about escaping combustion by-products mixing with the air inside. Gas condensing boilers are much more efficient than conventional types as they extract heat from the flue gases, which would otherwise be lost to the outside air. Some models are 98 percent efficient compared with conventional boilers, which are about 70 percent efficient.

Basement as guest or recreation rooms
It is important to maintain background heat in basements converted to living space that are only occasionally used. Even low-level heat will help prevent condensation and mould growth. It may be tempting to furnish basements used as play or recreation rooms with secondhand, cast-off sofas or couches, but these are likely to be full of dust mites and allergens, unless upholstered in leather or vinyl.

Introduction To The Rotation Diet

Natural Allergy Cures

The purpose of a Rotation Diet is to prevent the development of new allergies and intolerances to foods. Often people find that if they avoid the foods to which they are allergic or intolerant, they experience a great improvement in their health initially but can then start to feel unwell again. This is because they have become allergic or intolerant to something else in the meantime - often a substitute food, which they have eaten too frequently. For example, it is common for someone to replace cow's milk with soy milk, only to find they then develop an intolerance to soy. In addition, a Rotation Diet can also reduce existing food allergies and intolerances, as it allows the body to process each food properly. Hence, it is a way for many people to overcome their intolerances and, for those with multiple food allergies and intolerances, it can often mean they can include more items in their diet than they may otherwise be able to do.

Over average, it takes three days for a meal to pass through the human digestive system and to be processed by the body, so to be safe, the diet is based on a four-day plan. For example, if you were to eat wheat on Monday, you would then not have it again until Thursday.

With the exception of the grass family, when foods are rotated, it is the whole food family to which the particular food belongs that is rotated. This is important because people can cross-react to the "relatives" of a food to which they are intolerant. For instance, if you are intolerant to onions, you may suspect leeks, garlic, chives, and possibly asparagus.

You will need to avoid foods that you know cause reactions. You may also find that as your body clears, small sensitivities that had previously been masked may appear. In this case, you will need to avoid these as well.

However, if you have multiple allergies or intolerances and therefore have a very limited diet, you may have to eat some of the foods that cause the least reactions. If so, it is best to limit these to just once in the particular day. Or, you may find you can tolerate some foods if eaten less frequently - once in eight days, for example.

As the weeks go by and you feel your health improving, you could try to introduce a suspect food into your diet plan. It may very well be that as your body clears, so do your allergies and food intolerances. It is likely then that foods to which you previously reacted may no longer cause you any problems. If this is so, you can simple incorporate the food into your Rotation Diet. As long as you continue to rotate those foods, you should find that they remain safe foods for you.

This diet, therefore, may seem slightly tricky at first, but the benefits are numerous and long-lasting. It is possible to recover your health from an allergy or food-intolerance problem, and a Rotation Diet should prove to be an important part of such a recovery.

Allergy Hazard in Cots (Cribs) and Soft Toys

Natural Allergy Cures

Cots (cribs)

Although the same cot (crib) can be used for different babies over the years, each infant should have his or her own new mattress. Replace any mattress, however, if any signs of mould (black stains) develop. This will happen if it is not thoroughly dried out after becoming wet.

Cot (crib) mattresses are usually made of foam, though some people prefer a natural cotton stuffing. A foam mattress is usually partly covered with a vinyl plastic to protect it against soiling, while the section where the baby lays it head is left uncovered for safety reasons. Barrier covers for cot (crib) mattresses are available from specialist suppliers. Do not use homemade plastic covers - these are unsafe and may cause suffocation.

When allergic children move from a cot (crib) to their first "proper" bed they should start off with a new mattress, duvet, and pillow, which should all be protected with barrier covers to keep them mite-free right from the beginning.

Soft toys
Piles of soft toys in a bedroom are a health hazard for any child with a mite allergy. Just like soft furnishings and carpets, cuddly toys create an ideal breeding environment for mites. Soft toys should be tidied away in a closet or chest at night rather than kept on the bed or cot (crib). You may, however, need to make an exception for a child's favorite toy or blanket.

Keep soft toys in the bedroom to a minimum and, ideally, wash them weekly at water temperatures of 56ºC/133ºF or above. Toys can be washed at lower temperatures if a solution of mite-killing benzyl benzoate is used - but since favourite toys are likely to be sucked and in constant contact with the child, some parents may not be happy with this option. Alternatively, you can place soft toys inside a plastic bag and leave them in your refrigerator's freezer compartment for 3-4 hours. This will kill all the mites, but you will still have to wash their droppings away.

If you wash or freeze toys weekly right from new, dust mites will never have the opportunity to establish themselves in any great numbers, especially if you use barrier covers on all bedding so that there are no reservoirs of dust mite in the room to recolonize the clean toys.

Apply this regime, more or less strictly, to soft toys that are kept in other rooms, depending on how often the child plays with them. Carrying out this routine does require time and effort, and it may be easier to keep only a few soft toys, which you can then rotate through the anti-mite regime.

Tips For The Children's Rooms

Natural Allergy Cures

Anti-mite barrier covers

Cover mattress, duvets, and pillows in anti-mite barrier covers. All beds in the room should be treated in this way - even those of non-allergic children, since their bedding will also harbour dust mites and their allergen.

Bed linen should be changed weekly and washed at a high temperature (56ºC/133ºF or above) to kill the dust mite and remove the allergen. Other bedclothes, such as bedspreads, must also be washed weekly at high temperatures.

In hot, sunny climates an alternative to washing thicker bedclothes, such as quilts or bedspreads, on a weekly basis is to hang them in strong sunlight for several hours each week. The sunlight should kill most of the mites, and so reduce the amount of allergen produced. The remaining allergen will have to be washed out, possibly at only 3-monthly intervals.

The duvets and pillows themselves do not need regular washing if they have been covered with barrier covers. However, you will have to wipe the cover with a damp (but not wet) cloth to remove dust mites every time you change the bedding. Modern barrier covers are water permeable, so if a child wets the bed you will need to strip off all the bedding and wash it. Thorough drying of bedclothes is important, especially of thicker items such as quilts, to eliminate any risk of dampness and, therefore, mould growth.

Bunk and divan beds
If bunk beds are used, the allergic child should sleep on the top bed, as dust mites and allergen will drift down from the top bunk on to the child below. Divan beds inhibit the circulation of air beneath the mattress, and so any clothes or toys stored in drawers beneath the bed should be in breathable plastic storage bads to prevent mite colonization.

Aid Allergy Treatment Using Meditation

Natural Allergy Cures

Meditation is a safe and simple way to balance a person's physical, emotional, and mental states. It is easy to learn and can be useful both for treating stress and in pain management. Meditation, in the broadest sense, is any activity that keeps the attention focused in the present. When the mind is calm and focused in the present, it is neither reacting to past events or preoccupied with future plans, two major sources of chronic stress. There are many forms of meditation, but they can be categorized into two main approaches, concentration meditation and mindfulness meditation.

Concentration meditation focuses the "lens of the mind" on one object, sound (mantra), the breath, an image, or thought, to still the mind and allow greater awareness or clarity to emerge. The breath is one of the most popular objects of focus in this type of meditation. As the person focuses on the ebb and flow of their breath, the mind is absorbed in the rhythm and becomes more placid, tranquil, and still. Mindfulness-based meditation entails bringing the mind to a still point, tuning out the world and bringing the mind to a halt as much as possible. Mindfulness meditation helps us practice non-judgment. The meditator sits quietly and simply witness whatever goes through the mind, not reacting or becoming involved with thoughts, memories, worries, or images. This helps the person gain a more calm, clear, and non-reactive state of mind.

Transcendental Meditation (TM), a popular form of concentration meditation, is the most well-documented regarding the physiological effects of meditation, with more than 500 clinical studies conducted to date. Research shows that, during TM practice, the body gains a deeper state of relaxation than during ordinary rest or sleep. Brain wave changes indicate a state of enhanced awareness and coherence and TM has been found to increase intelligence, creativity, and perceptual ability and reduce blood pressure and rates of illness by 50%. TM also causes decreased blood levels of cortisol, a hormone responsible for many of the deleterious physiological changes seen with stress. By reducing cortisol levels, the adrenal glands are allowed to heal, which positively influences allergic inflammation.

Guidelines To Help You Through The Elimination Diet

Natural Allergy Cures

  • If you can, try to test the foods in as many different ways as possible - raw, lightly cooked, and cooked slowly for a longer time, as this may make a difference as to whether or not you react. Do not worry, though, if you cannot test all the members of each food family. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, but normally if you react to one member of a family, you will do so to all the others.
  • For those with multiple food intolerances, it may be that you will need to slow down the diet a little. For some people, just introducing one new food or food family at a time will be sufficient. Remember that this is a diet about getting well, not about racing to the end. If you are unsure about a reaction, you can leave the food family out and test again in four days' time.
  • You may find that you are trying out new foods that you have not eaten before. This is a good idea, not only because it offers you delicious new foods but it will also mean your diet may not be as limited as it might if you have to start avoiding certain foods. So try the quail eggs, the venison, and the tiger nuts, for example. They are delicious, and a way of ensuring you do not feel you are depriving yourself.
  • Once you have completed the Elimination Diet, you will have discovered which foods you are reacting to, and you can avoid these items so your system can have a rest. In this way it will have a chance to recover and rebalance. You may want to make a list of all the foods you have had a reaction to and note the severity of the reaction. If the reaction was only a minor one, you may find that you can eat it on an occasional basis, perhaps once a week, or in the Rotation Diet. Foods that cause major reactions, though, will need to be avoided for two to three months before being tested again.

Fabric Choices

Natural Allergy Cures

There are three categories of fabrics available: natural; synthetic; and natural/synthetic mixture. Each may represent a problem to an allergy sufferer.

Natural fabrics
Simply because a fabric is "natural" does not necessarily mean that it is "safe" for people with skin allergies. Wool is one example of a natural fabric that can cause intense irritation to some people. The reason for this appears to be the irritating effect of the wool fibres. Many of us, whether we have allergies or not, are familiar with the itchy feeling a woollen garment often has when worn next to the skin, an effect likely to be worse in people who already have eczema or dermatitis.

There is a popular misconception that it is the lanolin present in wool the produces the itchiness, but this is unlikely, since allergy to lanolin is rare in the general population. Nor is it particularly high among people who have skin allergies - some studies suggest that only about 1 percent of people with dermatitis are sensitive to lanolin allergens. This figure is even further decreased by the very refined, high-grade lanolin that is used in many skin-care products and preparations made for people with dry-skin conditions. Therefore, even if you suffer with true wool sensitivity due to lanolin allergens, skin-care products containing high-grade lanolin may be used safely. Ask your pharmacist for advice on suitable products.

Natural fabrics that are not usually associated with allergic reactions and should, therefore, not cause problems are cotton, silk, and leather. Most people suffering with eczema find that cotton clothing and bedding are far more comfortable than those made from wool or synthetic fibres. This is probably because cotton causes less sweating and skin irritation. There are specialist suppliers of unbleached, untreated cotton clothing and bedding.

Synthetics and natural/synthetic mixtures
One of the commonest of the synthetic fabrics is polyester, which is also found as component of some plastics and adhesives. Some clothes are bedding are made solely from polyester, but polyester fibres can also be combined with cotton to make what is known as polycotton. This material is frequently used for clothing, bed linen, carpeting, and as the stuffing in duvets and quilts.

Individuals can different greatly in their tolerance of synthetics and natural/synthetic mixtures. Some people, for example, find that the type of dye used with polyester fibres irritate their skin, while polycotton and cotton products labelled "easy-care", "crease-resistant", or "non-iron" have been treated with formaldehyde, a chemical that can cause a skin irritation in a few individuals.

Finishings and fasteners
Even if you have done your homework, and have managed to avoid buying any clothes or bedding made from fabrics to which you may react, something as simple as a rough seam or edge on a garment could be enough to irritate the skin of an eczeme sufferer and set up a reaction. Likewise, any exposed metal poppers, buttons, or zippers on clothes and bedding could be the trigger. Popper fasteners are popular on baby clothes, but these should be attached to the garment in such a way that they do not come into contact with the infant's skin.

Steps For Skin Detoxification

Natural Allergy Cures

Skin, as an extremely important detoxification organ, is an essential element of the whole detoxification and elimination system of the body. As in all other organs of the detoxification and elimination system, the skin should liberate the body from toxic substances. The pores and glands are the skin's main pathways of elimination, through which toxic chemicals can be excreted via either sweat or sebum (oil secreted by the skin). When these secretions are blocked, it can lead to detoxification problems.

The body's elimination organs can also help each other and take the place of an overstressed organ. Skin plays an important part in the elimination process, as it has to take over part of detoxification if the liver and kidneys can't fulfill their functions. This is the origin of many skin diseases, which in reality are extreme responses to the elimination process. Toxic overload is a major contributor to allergy and sensitivity.

To promote your skin's ability to detoxify, you need to detoxify your skin. Stephen B. Edelson, M.D., director of The Environmental and Preventive Health Center of Atlanta, in Georgia, emphasizes the importance of skin detoxification - especially sauna therapy - with his allergy patients.

Dry Skin Brushing
To enhance the skin's ability to detoxify, use a loofah sponge or dry skin brush. Brush the skin with long strokes towards the heart, before bathing or showering. Brushed skin is better able to eliminate toxins from the body, as oils and dead skin are removed and pores are unclogged. Toxins are transferred into the main lymphatic drainage ducts, which go directly to the liver for elimination. White blood cells also migrate into the skin after brushing and enhance the function of the immune system.

To proceed, simply begin gently brushing from the ends of the arms with long strokes that sweep towards the trunk of the body. Do all sides of the arms. Then brush the head and neck with downward strokes towards the clavicle (collar bone). Brush the feet and legs upward towards the groin area; again, be sure to brush all areas of the legs. As you brush the trunk, use upward-sweeping motions towards the heart. The ideal time to perform the dry skin brushing is prior to showering; then jump into the shower to remove the dead skin cells. Be sure to clean the brush thoroughly with soap and water and then hydrogen peroxide after each use.

Sauna (Heat Stress Detoxification)
Using a sauna can effectively clear the body of fat-soluble toxins. Studies of fat biopsies before and after a heat stress detoxification protocol revealed an average of 21.3% reduction in the body levels of 16 toxic chemicals, including PCBs and PBBs, with a 64%-75% reduction in harmful toxins. After discontinuing the heat and detoxification therapy, the study found that toxins in patients continued to decrease for up to four months. William Rea, M.D., director of the Environmental Health Center in Dallas, Texas, has published documentation showing that his detoxification program, and lymphatic drainage, produced a reduction of various pesticide residues ranging up to 66%. Dr. Edelson recommends that allergy patients do at least 15 minutes of aerobic exercise preceding sauna therapy to "improving circulation so that the chemicals will more easily leave the fats and move to the liver."

Use Ventilation To Your Advantage

Natural Allergy Cures

When looking at ventilation for your own home, any action you take should be guided by modern building regulations, which are designed to make sure there is sufficient ventilation to reduce potential damage due to condensation and to promote better interior air quality.

Following the advice in Step 1 should be satisfactory for most homes, but see Step 2 if you have an allergy sufferer in your home. Step 3 provides an excellent level of ventilation, but the cost involved needs to be considered critically against any extra health benefits.

Step 1
  • Install extractor (exhaust) fans in the kitchen and bathroom and fit air grilles (trickle ventilators) into the window frames of bedrooms and living rooms, or fit security locks that allow windows to be left safely ajar.
  • Leave bedroom trickle ventilators open in all but the coldest, windiest weather to ensure a supply of outside air to help keep humidity low.
  • Fit an overrun timer to the bathroom extractor (exhaust) fan and use it every time you have a bath or shower. Turn the fan on before the tap (faucet).
Step 2
  • Add a single-room ventilation unit to critical rooms, for example the bedroom of an asthmatic.
Step 3
  • Consider mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
  • If this is not possible, install a partial-house system serving upstairs only.

Each room of your home should have some form of 'rapid' and 'background' natural ventilation. Rapid ventilation can be provided in the form of an opening window. This is not difficult in most rooms, but some toilets and bathrooms may have fixed windows or none at all. In this case, you will need to fit an extractor (exhaust) fan.

Background ventilation is provided by a small opening that can be left open - one that does not let in rain or burglars. In homes with modern windows, this will usually be a trickle ventilator - a small air grille set into the window frame. In other homes, you may need to install trickle ventilators or put in security locks that allow windows to be left safely ajar.

"Extract" Ventilation
In "wet" rooms - those rooms that produce a lot of moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms - you should have a method of extracting water-laden air, probably via an extractor (exhaust) fan, although passive ventilation systems are used in some countries.

The Elimination Diet

Natural Allergy Cures

This diet consists of a modified fast for four days, followed by a gradual reintroduction of foods. Fasting ensures that the digestive system is rested so the body can begin to extract toxins from the cells and tissues. A pure fast would consist of taking nothing by mouth except spring water. Many people do this regularly because it makes them feel good. However, as the purpose of this diet is simply to clear your body of any possible items that may be causing adverse reactions, you do not need to eliminate all foods. Instead, you can eat foods that are very unlikely to cause any reaction and therefore toxins. Only those people familiar with fasting should attempt a water-only fast, as it can release toxins very quickly, often causing intense reactions.

By giving your body time to rest by fasting and cleansing, any food intolerances will start to become "unmasked." One of the effects of this is that any reaction to a good when reintroduced will be more acute, so foods that had little or no apparent effect on you may suddenly produce noticeable reactions. It will therefore be easy for you to work out whether a food is causing any problems. Whereas before, you body may have reacted only when run-down or under stress, and therefore less able to cope, the clearer your body becomes, the more definite the signs will be. You will also find that you can start to listen to your body and sense what it is telling you. This is an important first step to full health.

Do not be put off by the thought of having to change your daily life. Simply go about the alterations methodically and positively. Once you have bought the necessary items for your kitchen and cupboard and eliminated the things that need to be eliminated, you can then just incorporate the changes into your routine. The difference this can make to your health and to your life can be wonderful.

Monday

Stone Age Diet

Natural Allergy Cures

The "Stone Age diet" is another potentially useful diet plan for allergy sufferers. The theory behind this diet is that our bodies are not genetically adapted to the synthetic, processed foods that constitute much of our modern eating practices. Therefore, we are unable to digest many foods properly and they become allergenic as our body tries to defend against them.

According to Dr. Hoffer, due to the slow course of evolution, our digestive apparatus has remained the same for 10,000 years. Thus, we are best suited for the foods prevalent during the Paleolithic era - meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, and a few seeds. "You ate different foods in the spring, summer, fall, and winter and never had too much. You also did not load up on any one item," says Dr. Hoffer. However, modern agriculture and processing advances now allow us to eat an abundance of the same foods, especially grains, everyday of the year. "Today, you may find 100 cereals in the supermarket, but they're all made from corn, wheat, rice, sugar, and artificial color," explains Dr. Hoffer. "If you overload the gut with one particular item, for instance bread three times a day, then eventually the body breaks down." Malnourishment and a leaky gut are elements of this breakdown.

Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., of London, England, speculates that the change away from a caveman-type diet over the centuries is associated with the increase in allergies worldwide. Lending weight to this theory is the fact that it is precisely those foods our cave-dwelling ancestors did not eat - cereal grains, dairy products, and modern processed foods - that most frequently provoke allergic reactions.

The Stone Age diet requires eating only seasonal produce as well as protein foods, such as meat, fish, and seeds, and few grains and processed foods. No food chemicals or additives are allowed. Dr. Chaitow reports that patients following the Stone Age diet report impressive results. "In the majority of cases, most allergy problems vanish after a few weeks of eating this way. And with many patients, a gradual reintroduction of the offending foods is possible on a rotating basis."

Using Garlic & Goldenseal Against Allergies

Natural Allergy Cures

Garlic (Allium Sativum)

One of the least expensive yet most effective ways to deal with parasites is to use an extract of garlic. Raw garlic and garlic extract have been shown to destroy common intestinal parasites, including roundworms and hookworms. According to Chinese research, in the treatment of 100 cases of amoebic dysentery, the cure rate with garlic was 88%. The study found the purple-skinned bulbous garlic was more effective than the white-skinned variety. In another case, enemas made from tea containing garlic were used for 154 cases of pinworm in children two to nine years old; treatments were repeated on the third and seventh day after the initial treatment. After this period, tests for parasite eggs around the anus were negative (meaning no eggs were found) in 76 of the patients.

Some alternative medicine physicians use freshly juiced garlic (refrigerated after pressing) in the treatment of parasites, dysbiosis, Candida albicans, and other infectious microbes. Common dosage is two to three teaspoons in a two-liter bag, which is infused into the patient's colon at the end of a colonic. If doing an enema at home, use 1-2 cloves of garlic, crush them, steep them in a tea for 10-15 minutes with a tight cover, allow this to cool to body temperature, and then put this in the enema bag. Garlic is fairly caustic and if you use too much, you can injure tissues, so it's better to use a small amount. As an oral supplement, two cloves of fresh garlic daily are recommended; in capsule form, 500 mg, twice daily.

Goldenseal (Hydrastic Canadensis)

The alkaloid berberine is found in many plants and in particularly high concentrations in goldenseal. Berberine inhibits the growth of several common parasities that invade the intestine, including Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Erwinia carotovora, and Leishmania donvania. In one study, children with giardiasis were given either berberine sulfate (a standardized goldenseal extract) or the drug Flagyl. After ten days, both substances produced similar results: 90% of the berberine-treated group no longer had Giardia in their stools compared to 95% of the Flagyl-treated group. Unlike the Flagyl-treated group, however, those receiving berberine suffered no negative side effects. Typical dosage: 500 mg, three times daily.

Pillows, Bedding and Bed Linens

Natural Allergy Cures

Pillows and Bedding

Within 12 months from new, a pillow will have increased in weight by 10 percent due to the presence of mites, mite droppings, and skin scales. In the past it was recommended that feather or down pillows and duvets should be replaced with synthetic bedding termed "non-allergenic" or "hypo-allergenic". However, there is conflicting evidence about which type of filling is best for allergy sufferers. Whether filled with foam or feathers, pillows should always be covered with barrier covers.

Bedspreads or quilts are probably best avoided as mites will breed in them, too, unless you are prepared to wash them weekly. Alternatively, in hot, sunny climates you can hang them in the sun or a few hours a week to kill the mites.

Bed Linen

All sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers, and any blankets should be washed weekly. This must be at a temperature of 56ºC/133ºF or above to kill the mites. At lower temperatures, the mites survive, although mite allergen and dead mites will be washed out. Some people get around this problem by adding mite-killing chemicals to lower-temperature washes. Of these, benzyl benzoate is the mildest and most studied, and is, therefore, probably your best choice. However, if you prefer not to have any traces of an acaricide next to your skin, you may prefer to invest in bed line that is washable at the right temperature to kill mites, or at least rinse the bed linen extra thoroughly if using such a product. Alternatively, freezing bedclothes for a few hours - in a domestic chest freezer - will kill the mites and allow you to use a lower wash temperature.

As an alternative to covering your pillow with a separate anti-mite barrier cover, there is now a type of pillow that comes ready-made with one. And since the material is also a physical barrier to bacteria, the pillow is also hygienic. In the future, other articles of bedding, such as duvets, may be available made out of the same material.

Anti-Mite Barrier Covers

Natural Allergy Cures

Barrier covers are a proven method of avoiding exposure to mite allergen. One cover fits beneath the bottom sheet, enclosing the entire mattress, while others fit between the pillows and pillow cases and between the duvet and its cover. All bedding needs to be covered - it is simply not worth covering the mattress alone. Ideally, fit barrier covers on a new mattress and bedding before use, so that you prevent infestation right from the start.

Barrier covers prevent you coming into contact with the mite allergen contained within the fabric of your mattress and bedding. Some mites will survive on top of the cover, living on the skin scales you continually shed, but these will be few in number and can be removed weekly by changing the sheets. This is also when you should wipe the surface of the barrier cover with a damp (not wet) cloth to remove any mites and shed skin. Wash the barrier covers about twice as year, or as advised by the manufacturer.

Old-fashioned covers are made of plastic. Although they are an effective barrier against mites and mite allergen, they do not allow water to pass through, so that you wake in the morning damp from the sweat you produced while asleep.

In contrast, modern covers are made out of a soft, microporous material that allows both water and air to pass through - although brands differ in how well they do this. Concerning durability, covers with a manufacturer's guarantee of at least 10 years are better value for money than the less expensive types that will need replacing more often.

Also available are cotton bedding covers impregnated with acaricides - chemicals that kill mites. However, little is known about the long-term effects of the chemicals on humans, and the covers do not provide a barrier to the mite allergen.

Protecting your mattress

Within three months, under the right conditions of warmth and humidity, a new mattress will be almost as infested as one that has been in use for years. One estimate has suggested that up to 2 million mites could live in a double-bed mattress. Most mites live in the uppermost layers of the mattress and some people vacuum their mattress in the mistaken belief that they are ridding themselves of the dust mite. In fact, these tiny creatures cling to the mattress fabric and, at best, you will remove only a tiny proportion of the live mites by vacuuming.

A more effective treatment is to use a mite-killing chemical (acaricide) on the mattress and bedding. However, acaricides don't penetrate far enough to kill mites deep inside the mattress and so are not as effective as when used on carpeting. Furthermore, they need to be applied at least every three months.

Liquid nitrogen, which freezes the mites, dry steam cleaning, and heat treatment are other approaches. All of these are unnecessary, however, if you use anti-mite barrier covers.
