How To Make Your Carpeting Less Allergenic

The first and best choice for people with allergies is to remove all carpeting. Washable throw rugs are a better option.

  • If you want carpeting, the best choice is a short-fiber carpet laid down with water-based adhesives as opposed to solvents. The short fibers release allergens to vacuuming more readily than the more complex fibers.
  • Solid foam carpet pads are a better choice than the multicolor pads of recycled material, which are pieced together with glue; they are also less expensive
  • Watch out for wool carpets; some people are allergic to the lanolin they contain.
  • Before installing a carpet, have the floor cleaned thoroughly and seal any cracks in the foundation and exterior walls. This prevents insects, pollution, dirt, and mold from accumulating on the carpet.
  • Lift your carpet and inspect underneath for mold growth from water leaks. Signs that you might have mold are stains and rusty nails on the tack strips. Mold on floors can be removed with a 10% bleach solution and water. If you are the one with allergies, it is preferable to have someone else do it.
  • Never carpet the bathroom. Mold flourishes with moisture. Also, dust mites prefer warm temperatures and 50% or greater humidity. When you take a bath or shower you are inviting them to enjoy ideal conditions as well as providing them with food in the form of skin cells that drop to the floor when you towel yourself off. Carpeting becomes a breeding ground.
  • Have your carpet cleaned with a professional truck-mounted, high-suction, external vacuum so that the dirt is removed from the house. A safe detergent would be an unscented emulsifier. You can use natural enzymes for stains. A professional will hand-spray the carpet, then use pure hot water and extract the debris. Do not use too much water or you can saturate the carpet and pad, attracting mold.
  • Remove your shoes outside so that you don't trap toxins and allergens from outside in your carpet. This is particularly important if you have a baby crawling on the carpet.
  • Vacuum at least once a week. A central vacuum with good airflow and rotating brush and head is recommended so that the dander and dust are beat out of the carpet and forced outside. Another good choice is a heavier vacuum with rotating brushes and high-efficiency filter bags. True HEPA filter vacuums are good. The seals should be checked on all filters to make sure they are tightly fitted.
