Natural Allergy Cures
A basement is most often converted into a utility room. If you want to use this space as a laundry area, install an extractor (exhaust) fan to exhaust excess moisture. Tumble driers should always be vented to the outside, no matter what room they are installed in. Some heat-recovery devices are available that recirculate hot air from the dryer back into the house. However, they are not recommended, since they are unlikely to filter out sufficiently very fine airborne particles.
There is always a possibility of a washing machine leaking or a freezer defrosting, causing some degree of flooding. To forestall problems, the floor of a basement utility room should incorporate a drain to remove any water spills that may occur. If a flood does occur, use a portable dehumidifier to help dry it out.
Boilers or furnaces are sometimes located in basements. A balanced-flue gas boiler ensures that the air used for combustion is drawn from the outside, rather than from inside the room, and that all the flue gases are exhausted outside. This eliminates the need for extra ventilation and relieves you of any worry about escaping combustion by-products mixing with the air inside. Gas condensing boilers are much more efficient than conventional types as they extract heat from the flue gases, which would otherwise be lost to the outside air. Some models are 98 percent efficient compared with conventional boilers, which are about 70 percent efficient.
Basement as guest or recreation rooms
It is important to maintain background heat in basements converted to living space that are only occasionally used. Even low-level heat will help prevent condensation and mould growth. It may be tempting to furnish basements used as play or recreation rooms with secondhand, cast-off sofas or couches, but these are likely to be full of dust mites and allergens, unless upholstered in leather or vinyl.
