With China’s long history of medicine, it is no surprise that natural allergy cures has been discovered by ancient healer. One of the things that the Chinese discovered is the wonders of ephedra. Today, ephedra is still a mainstay of TCM treatments for allergies and asthma. Doctors from the East often combine ephedra with licorice and ginseng for natural allergy cures and remedies.

Doctors and scientists in Western cultures are beginning to study such combination remedies. The new research suggests that they may be a useful alternative to conventional medicines and cause fewer side effects.

For example, researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia studied 58 patients with allergic rhinitis. Fifty percent of the patients received a TCM formula with the other fifty percent receiving a placebo. At the end of the study, the researchers concluded that the TCM formula, known as BIMIN, is effective in treating rhinitis. This study concludes that TCM isthe first herbal medication that has been proven to be effective for this condition in a rigorous scientific trial.

In addition to allergic rhinitis, TCM remedies have shown promise for treating asthma. Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University in New York City and John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore studied the effects of two TCM formulas - Ding-Chuan-Tang (DCT) and Jia Wei San Zi Tang (modified Three Seeds Decoction, or MTSD) - on mice with asthma. They found that these two medicines significantly reduced IgE antibody production and relieved the mice’s asthma.

We use Ephedra a lot in India (Ayurvedic medicines) too!
In fact, we grow plants similar to Ephedra along our garden hedges in many villages.
