Herbal Allergy Relief

Natural allergy cures

Herbal Allergy Relief

Plants and herbs not only offer us vitamins, minerals and trace elements, they also provide phytonutrients (phyto=plant) that are found in plants and herbs to protect the plant from its environmental predators: sun damage, pests and toxins. It is these phytonutrients that make certain vegetations great plant and herbal allergy relief products.

Scientists have been able to use plants and herbs to create common drugs: digoxin was originally derived from foxglove and aspirin from willow bark. Before the advent of pharmaceuticals, traditional healers have long used plants in their environment for treatments: ancestors for herbal allergy relief as a branch of natural allergy cures. Although they were forgotten once antibiotics were discovered and widely used, plants and herbs are now being revitalized as a treatment approach because bacteria have become resistant to antibiotic therapy. Standard drug therapies have been less than effective in treating 20th-century diseases caused by poor nutrition, stress and environmental toxins, in addition to the side-effects that these drug cause. Natural medicines, used for generations, have the ability to stimulate the human immune system to fight its own battles, paving the way for natural plant and herbal allergy relief.

Because phytonutrients are able to enhance our body’s self-protective powers, our immune system is the benefactor of plant and herbal nutrients. Plant constituents known as sterols and sterolins help the immune system to stop cancer, kill bacteria, destroy viruses or slow the ageing process. The sterolin-specific product that enhances the way our immune system works originated from Africa.

Although there are many immune-enhancing nutrients and foods, none has the immune-enhancing effects of a unique product out of Africa called ModucareTM. Developed from plants sources, this combination of sterols and sterolins has been shown to have powerful healing effects on cancer, AIDS, tuberculosis, and autoimmune disorders. ModucareTM makes for a great supplement: a natural, herbal allergy relief proven to be effective.

Liver & Allergies

Natural Allergy Cures

There is a huge relationship between the liver & allergies. The liver is a vital part of the human body, and it is the most powerful organ of the body’s defense system. This is not because the liver fights off invaders, but because it detoxifies our body in our defense and immune system. If the liver fails (e.g. the person suffers from hepatitis or liver cancer), the body accumulates such profound toxicity that if the problem is not solved, death follows. Hundreds of thousands of chemicals foreign to the body – xenobiotics – are disarmed and disposed of via the liver. This major organ is our speedy toxic disposal system and our immune system would be dysfunctional without it. As mentioned before, our liver & allergies can be critical in our everyday life.

There are ways to strengthen the liver. Milk thistle is good as it supports the many functions of the liver. The recommended intake is 175 mg, three times daily with meals. Look for a supplement that has a standardized extract of silymarin, of at least 80 percent.

Understanding how the liver & allergies tie together is crucial in leading a healthy life for those suffering from allergies.

Vitamins and Minerals: Promising Natural Approaches

Natural allergy cures

In this final part of the alternative therapy cures series, the last natural allergy cures that we examine are ones that most of us are familiar with since we were young.

Vitamins and Minerals

It is quite unfortunate, but compared to alternative practitioners, conventional allergists have been relatively slow to recommend supplements that may help treat allergies and asthma or mitigate the side effects of conventional drugs.

For example, one of the recommendations some alternative practitioners have made is to take extra vitamin C to prevent cataracts, a potential side effect from the long-term use of corticosteroids.

But conventional doctors are taking up the cue as the weight of scientific evidence clearly shows that some supplements are especially useful for people with allergies and asthma. Here are some of them that you can try.

Calcium: Although calcium might not have any direct benefits, taking the recommended daily amount can prevent another side effect associated with long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids: osteoporosis.

Magnesium: Magnesium supplementation is believed to help with opening congested airways as studies show that magnesium levels are low in people who have asthma.

Vitamin C: If you have asthma, this vitamin is especially effective for you as it improves lung functions. This well-known natural allergy cures also helps to prevent cataracts.

Mind-Body Therapies: Promising Natural Approaches

Natural Allergy Cures

In the final part of alternative therapy cures, we look at some therapies that soothes the mind as well as the body.

Mind-Body Therapies

Stress is definitely a fun-killer, especially for people suffering from allergies and asthma. Stress acts as a double poison as it places our body in a state of alarm, - the so-called fight-or-flight response; it also increases production of the allergy anti-body immunoglobulin E (IgE), which results in increased sneezing and wheezing. In extreme cases, the stress can even increase a patient's chance to the most dangerous form of asthma: status asthmaticus.

Some conventional allergists believe reducing stress will be a form of natural allergy cure and asthma relief; interests in mind-body therapies have increased as a result.

In alternative practices, the following mind-body therapies play a central role in allergy treatment.
- Acupressure
- Acupuncture
- Breathing exercises
- Chiropractic
- Guided visualization
- Hypnotherapy
- Massage
- Meditation
- Osteopathy
- Reflexology
- Yoga

These therapies yield various results. Small-scale studies suggest modest benefits from acupuncture, breathing exercises, guided visualization, hypnosis, and massages. Some therapies, for example acupuncture for children with asthma, have shown short-term improvements only, while other therapies, such as a comprehensive yoga program for adolescents with asthma, appear to have more far-reaching and long-lasting effects. And then there are some therapies, such as chiropractic for children with asthma, that yield results that showed no improvements.

One would figure that standard stress-management therapies would be helpful since stress has been shown to exacerbate allergies and asthma. However researchers in were unable to find any group benefits from hypnosis or massage in the treatment of asthma. When they measured airflow within the patients, they found no objective difference between those who received mind-body therapies and those that did not.

However, some doctors believe that on an individual level mind-body therapies can make an effective difference.

The greatest potential of such therapies is on a psychological level. Because they make the patients relax and feel good, these therapies encourage patients to take better care of themselves using other methods as well. For some patients, that might mean better compliance with a conventional asthma regimen. Other times the patients might adopt a leaner diet or a meaner exercise program. No matter how they take charge of their allergies, the simple fact that they've chosen to do so is empowering.

The more patients become involved and the more self-care they practice, the better they do. How much of that is compliance and how much is in the mind is hard to define. Therefore for complete natural allergy cure and relief, what the mind experiences is just as important as what body experiences.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Promising Natural Approaches

Natural allergy cures

Continuing on alternative therapy cures for allergy, we present potential cures from the East.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

With China’s long history of medicine, it is no surprise that natural allergy cures has been discovered by ancient healer. One of the things that the Chinese discovered is the wonders of ephedra. Today, ephedra is still a mainstay of TCM treatments for allergies and asthma. Doctors from the East often combine ephedra with licorice and ginseng for natural allergy cures and remedies.

Doctors and scientists in Western cultures are beginning to study such combination remedies. The new research suggests that they may be a useful alternative to conventional medicines and cause fewer side effects.

For example, researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia studied 58 patients with allergic rhinitis. Fifty percent of the patients received a TCM formula with the other fifty percent receiving a placebo. At the end of the study, the researchers concluded that the TCM formula, known as BIMIN, is effective in treating rhinitis. This study concludes that TCM isthe first herbal medication that has been proven to be effective for this condition in a rigorous scientific trial.

In addition to allergic rhinitis, TCM remedies have shown promise for treating asthma. Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University in New York City and John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore studied the effects of two TCM formulas - Ding-Chuan-Tang (DCT) and Jia Wei San Zi Tang (modified Three Seeds Decoction, or MTSD) - on mice with asthma. They found that these two medicines significantly reduced IgE antibody production and relieved the mice’s asthma.

Homeopathy : Promising Natural Approaches

Natural allergy cures

In continuation of the previous entry
Herbs and Spices : Promising Natural Approaches, here we will introduce another up-and-rising alternative therapy: homeopathy.

Homeopathy

About 10 years, the National Institutes of Health challenged conventional researchers to compare homeopathic medicine to conventional treatments for chronic illness such as allergies and asthma. But it is unfortunate that conventional researchers do not take homeopathy serious, and not many studies have been conducted. A lot of conventional doctors simply have the mindset that homeopathy doesn't work because it can't work.

How homeopathic allergy remedies works is that small amounts of allergenic substances are dissolved in water. The solution is then diluted until all the molecules of the original allergenic substances are dissolved. The resulting "remedy" is then used to desensitize patients to the allergens via its effect on the whole body through a local injection.

Although conventional doctors are skeptical of homeopathy, there is no denying that homeopathy is becoming increasingly popular in many nations, including the USA.
Since there is little risk in taking such diluted remedies, some conventionally trained physicians are willing to entertain the notion that it might help.

Here are the results of some recent studies on the usefulness of homeopathy in treating allergic rhinitis and asthma.

- In California, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 32 patients with allergic rhinitis was conducted. Fifty percent of the patients were treated with a homeopathic nasal gel (Zicam Allergy Relief) containing Luffa operculata, Galphimia glauca, Histmainum hydrochlorium, and Sulfur. The 50% of the patients were treated with a placebo nasal gel. (a placebo is a fake medication, but the patients do not know that it is fake.) The results here were positive: the Zicam-treated group's symptoms improved 52 percent compared with a 19 percent improvement in the group treated with placebos.

- In England, another double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted. This time, 50 patients with allergic rhinitis were treated. Half of the patients were given an oral homeopathic remedy containing a dilution of dust mite, tree pollen, and cat dander, while the other half were again treated with placebo pills. The researchers concluded from this study that the homeopathic remedy cleared up the patient’s stuffy schnozzles as effectively as steroid sprays.

Although more scientific studies have yet to be done for conventional therapies to fully accept homeopathy treatments, there is no doubt that homeopathy treatments are gaining ground to other treatments as natural allergy cures.

Spices and Herbs for Allergies : Promising Natural Approaches

Natural allergy cures

For the next couple of natural allergy cures entries, some alternative therapies will be introduced. A number of these therapies have undergone scientific study, and may appeal even to the most conventional practitioners. We will talk about some herbs for allergies that have shown promise in allergy relief.

Herbs and spices

In the previous entry Natural Allergy Cures That Works: Our Diet, some herbs have already been introduced. Here are some more herbal supplements and spices that show promise for relieving the symptoms of allergies and asthma.

Garlic: Garlic has the effect of enhancing the production of anti-inflammatory chemicals in our body, making it a healthy and tasty herb that we can use daily.

Coleus forskholii: Another great natural allergy cure herb; in one report, this Ayurvedic herb was reported to have a powerful bronchodilator effect with the plus side of fewer side effects than conventional drugs.

Ginkgo biloba: A controlled study of this herb demonstrated decreased asthma triggered by dust mites. It may also protect against exercise-induced asthma.

Cinnamon: Most people are familiar with this spice. Small doses of cinnamon can stimulate respiration in people with asthma or allergic rhinitis. Animal studies show it can prevent a variety of allergic reactions, including some types of anaphylaxis.

Licorice root: Not to be confused with "licorice" candy (which contains anise), this herb contains a natural steroid that reduces cough and inflammation. Be careful though, as it can cause hypertension (high blood pressure) if you take licorice root for more than 2 weeks. Like many herbs for allergies, the licorice root has been used for a long time to for allergy relief.

Saiboku-to: Although it is not quite “natural” as it is a pill supplement, I will include it here anyways as it is made from natural ingredients.
This Japanese asthma remedy contains 10 herbs. It has been shown to help some people with asthma get off or reduce steroids, but it has lots of side effects, including pneumonia.

Tylophora indica: There are some minor side effects to this Ayurvedic herb, such as mouth soreness and nausea.
But this herb is as effective for asthma as epinephrine. This herb is also known as Tylophora asthmatica.

There are many herbs for allergies relief in the world; the above mentioned is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope to continue to discover and share any that I find in the near future here.

Vacuuming Your Place Clean - Part 2

Natural allergy cures

Continuing on our natural allergy cures: vacuuming part 2. There is another type of filtering vacuum cleaner uses water to trap the dust (let us refer to this type of vacuum as water vacuum cleaner). This type of vacuum costs quite a bit of money (relative to other vacuum cleaners). Taking an air sample at the exhaust of a vacuum and you will find many aerosolized particulates. There’s been evidence found that cat allergen from dander in house dust dissolves in the water and was then emitted back into the air as a finer aerosol. To make matters worst, a lot of people simply does not follow instructions for the proper use of these vacuums. For example, the water is supposed to be emptied when the vacuuming is completed, but one man did not empty the water with the dust in the vacuum, and then stored the vacuum inside a closet. You can imagine what grew in this dusty reservoir; talk about a natural allergy cure, except it is in the opposite direction!

There are some who prefer a central vacuum system rather than the traditional portable vacuum cleaners. If you are one of these people, be sure that the exhaust vents to the outside, not to the garage or basement. (The outside vent should be as close to the motor as possible. If the exhaust path is too long, back-pressure might reduce the airflow.) If dust collects around the unit, this is likely caused by a leak in your blower.

A question that always comes up for natural allergy cures is: how often should you vacuum? A good rule of thumb is at least once a week when cleaning floors and stuffed furniture with a HEPA vacuum. If you are extremely dust-allergic and you use a regular vacuum cleaner, be sure to wear an N95 NIOSH mask and air the house out after vacuuming. And never, ever use a shop vacuum to clean up dust in your house, and never use an ordinary vacuum for moldy dust.

Allergens such as dander and mites in your carpet are never completely removed by vacuuming. A good way is to replace your carpet if the irritants prove too troublesome. Be careful about removing the carpet yourself if the carpet contains lead paint dust or asbestos fibers; you may want to have the carpet removed by a professional. It is not expensive to test for lead and asbestos, so when in doubt, take dust samples. (Always change the pad and HEPA vacuum the floor prior to replacing a carpet.)

Vacuuming Your Place Clean - Part 1

Natural allergy cures

One of the natural allergy cures that we can do is of course keeping our house clean. Vacuuming is one critical step in doing so.

We often only think machines operate only in one way; for example, most of us think of a vaccum cleaner as a machine that draws dirt and dust in. However, another way of looking at it is that in fact the vacuum is pulling in air that contains the dirt and dust. The air that flowed into the machine has to flow out from somewhere, and we hope the dirt and dust particles will remain behind in the filter. But it is hard for this to happen with microscope particles because most vacuums leak. Particulates escape through the openings around seals and from within the vacuum bags itself as the particulates are much too small. In addition, the carpet surface is disturbed when you vacuum vigorously with any type of equipment, thereby releasing additional contaminants into the air.

There are special filtration systems for some vacuum cleaners. I prefer a vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate arrestance) filter; this filter works against all “large” particles and claim to contain at least 99.97 percent of the 0.3 micron particles caught through the machine. I highly recommend those with allergies in the family use only a HEPA vacuum, as it is highly effective compared with other vacuum cleaners. If you plan to purchase one of these machines, check Consumer Reports magazine for the latest evaluation of the various models.

Be careful about the "optional HEPA" filter attachments on vacuum cleaners. The filter holder secured to the vacuum using two tabs that fitted out of the openings around the tabs. Most of the exhaust air blew unfiltered out of the openings around the tabs, completely defeating the purpose of the HEPA filter. If you do decide to purchase a HEPA vacuum, be sure the holder is airtight and that the filter is properly placed in its holder. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for filter replacement. If you are very allergic to dust, wear an N95 NIOSH fine-particle mask and go outdoors to change the vacuum bag, and be sure the inside of the compartment that holds the bag is clean. If you can, try not to use vacuums without bags, because dumping the dust may create allergenic aerosol.

Asthma and Allergies –Connection Between the Two?

Natural allergy cures

A lot of people who suffer from asthma also suffer from allergies, and the allergies are usually playing a part in causing the asthma. Children are especially prone to this pattern: about 90% of asthmatic children are allergic to something, and that is either the main cause of their asthma or a critical contributor.

However not all asthma is associated with allergy. In particular, people who first develop asthma when they are adults are much less likely to have an allergy playing a part in their asthma.

How does allergy produce asthma?

Allergens in the air

Many allergens come into the airway when we inhale, as they are found in the atmosphere and in the air that we breathe. They are all tiny particles, which cannot be detected with the naked eye and can only be seen with a microscope. Airborne allergens include things such as house dust mite droppings, moulds, cat allergen, dog allergen and pollen. If you are allergic to one of these and one of these landed on the surface of your airways, then a direct reaction will occur which makes the airway inflamed. There is swelling of the airway lining which reduces the flow of air through the airway. The inflammation also signals the muscles of the airways to contract, producing even more narrowing.

For some lucky folks, removing the allergen makes all these effects vanish. This is what happens to asthmatics who get asthma only during the pollen season. But for other asthmatics, the inflammation of the airway lining continues all season long, and the arrival of the allergen just makes matters worse. Natural allergy cures in combination with medicine prescribed by a doctor will go a long way in getting relief.

Other allergens

Although inhaled allergens such as pollen and dust are the main offenders in asthma, allergens from other sources such as food and beverages can also be a culprit.

Asthma may be linked to a true food allergy, which is a prompt and often quite serious reaction to food. The more severe type of reaction is known as anaphylactic shock or anaphylaxis. With some people, anaphylaxis is caused by wasp and/or bee stings, and for others it is the combination of eating an allergenic food and taking exercise that provokes anaphylaxis. There are other sources as well, such as anti-venom, given for snake bites, also can provoke anaphylaxis in those who have had anti-venom before. And one of the more common allergies, latex allergy, are vulnerable to anaphylactic shock if latex gloves are used during a medical examination or surgery. Anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening, especially in asthmatics because very severe asthma attack often accompanies anaphylactic shock. This condition must be treated by a specialist immediately.

Less dramatically, eating a particular food day after day, such as wheat or milk, may be contributing to asthma or even be the sole cause. This is not a true allergy but is known as food intolerance. A targeted diet with natural allergy cures such as juices and herbs is necessary.

It is rarely obvious that there is any link between the food and the asthma, but there are usually other symptoms that suggest food intolerance. Those with brittle asthma may be more likely to have food intolerance.

Food Allergy 100 - History

Natural allergy cures

How allergic reactions develop

When you first ingest a potentially allergenic food, you might not exhibit symptoms, but your immune system mistakenly prepares to protect you against it. The next time you eat that same food your body releases chemicals that cause symptoms such as eczema or even life-threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis.

Food allergies usually begin in childhood and the person might carry it for life. There are some allergies, such as milk allergy, that may be outgrown with time.

There is a difference between food allergy and food intolerance. People who suffer from food intolerance are not able to digest or process specific foods properly, resulting in bloating, abdominal pain, wind, vomiting, or diarrhea. The problem usually results from enzyme deficiency; this enzyme is required by the body to digest some foods. Unlike food allergies, intolerances are usually not dangerous or life-threatening.

Allergy history

It is estimated that by the age of two, five to eight percent of all children may develop a food allergy. It should be noted that studies suggest children with a family history of allergies may be two to four times more likely to develop an allergy or intolerance.

Prevention against allergies and intolerances should start as soon as possible, especially when your child is just a baby. Infancy is an especially vulnerable time for food allergies to develop. According to some studies, babies who are exclusively breast-fed for a prolonged period, develop less eczema and wheezing in the first year of life compared to babies who are fed cow’s or soya milk formula. Babies especially should void allergy medicine and drugs whenever possible due to their possible side-effects, and undertake natural allergy cures and precautions.

Food Allergy 101

Natural allergy cures

Foods that trigger allergy: avoid them

Ninety percent of all food allergies are accounted for by just eight foods. They are eggs, milk, fish, shellfish, soya, gluten, peanuts, and tree nuts (for example, walnuts or almonds). Typically it is the protein component of a food that triggers the allergic responses. However, there are foods and beverages that we do not typically think of as containing protein, such as citrus fruits or potatoes, can actually contain enough protein to cause an allergic reaction within us.

Be careful when eating out

It is very important to watch out for allergy-trigger foods when dining out. Some types of cuisines frequently contain foods that trigger allergic reactions easily, such as peanut protein or oil or gluten or soya products. Be sure to ask your waiter to check the ingredients in the food and beverages you are ordering. You must make it clear that if you eat a particular food that you are allergic to, it could have serious implications; it is not just that you do not like something.

When travelling to other countries, you should learn how to say the name of any trigger foods, or have the name written down in the language of the country you are visiting. At the same time, take advantage by asking and finding out what the locals do for natural allergy cures when they encounter allergies.

Caution: hidden ingredients

It is critical that you familiarize yourself with the different names of the substances that contain the food that affect you and look for them on labels if you have food allergy or food intolerance. Dairy products and eggs are often hidden in a wide range of foods; and it is true with as well with gluten, which can be hidden in processed meats, yogurt, cheeses, sauces, gravies, and even frozen vegetables. Be careful that many processed foods contain corn syrup and many products that are labeled with dextrose or fructose. There are food coloring that are also made from corn.

Skin-prick test

In this test, a drop of a common allergen (a substance that can cause an allergic reaction) is placed on the skin, which is then punctured with a small needle. It is a positive test result if the skin reacts to the allergen by producing a weal or a hive. A positive result should be followed with a 2-step procedure. One: following a diet that eliminates the suspected food and two: conducting a food challenge, in which the allergic food is ingested again to see if the symptoms return. Food challenge tests must be medically supervised as they may trigger anaphylaxis.

Xanthone Found In Mangosteen

Natural Allergy Cures

I recently read an article about a fruit that works well against allergies. It is called mangosteen.

It's not a commonly-known fruit such as apples and oranges, and I've only read about it in food magazines until a few months ago, when a relative brought it over to my house.

In the Chinese community, mangosteen is known as the "queen of fruit" (the title of "king of fruit" belongs to durian). It is a purple fruit with the size of about a small apple. You eat the white fruit flesh after breaking through the hard purple exterior shell.

Why is mangosteen good for our allergies?

According to the article, xanthones are double bonded molecules with chemical side chains and a skeletal structure that is beneficial to our body's defense system. Each chemical side chains treats a different health issue in your body. As well, the xanthones act as virus and parasite hunters, and also boosts our immune system by strengthening our vital organs.

Aloe vera contains 1 xanthone. A mangosteen contains more than 40 xanthones.

In addition to xanthone, mangosteens also contain other nutrients such as catechins, quinones, polysaccharides, stilbenes, vitamins and minerals.

It turns out I found more than just a refreshingly-tasting fruit in the mangosteen.

Natural Allergy Cures That Works: Our House

Natural Allergy Cures

Apparently I inherited the "allergy genes" passed onto my mom from my granddad; some of the allergies and symptoms that we suffer are almost identical. Being fearful (sometimes legit, sometimes not) of the side-effects that allergy medicine brings, one of the critical things my granddad did was to control the environment that he was living in for one his natural allergy cures. Here are some things that he did that made a HUGE difference.

An air purifier
Invest in a quality air purifier. But before doing so, do a little bit of research. If you're buying for your home then a large job purifier would be better for the larger space; whereas if you're buying for your office then a smaller purifier would do the job. And there are different kinds of air purifiers, from asthma-specific purifiers to pet/industrial/chemical-sensitive purifiers. For me and my granddad, we picked the general all-purpose kind, one that does ionization, picks up pollens, and uses ultra-violet light to kill the viruses and bacterias in the air.

It is especially important that you leave the air purifier on while you're resting and sleeping. It allows your body to recover the way it suppose to instead of working to fight the allergy responses.

Dust mite and mold resistant sheets and pillowcases

For those allergic to dust mites and molds, these are blessings from heaven. There's nothing worst than the sneezing and itchy throats keeping you up at night, and these sheets will help in allowing you to get the rest that you need. There are also allergy curtains and wallpapers available, but that's going to cost you a bit more money. But it might be worthwhile to invest in them as one of the natural allergy cures if you're seriously suffering from the symptoms.
