Homeopathy : Promising Natural Approaches

Natural allergy cures

In continuation of the previous entry
Herbs and Spices : Promising Natural Approaches, here we will introduce another up-and-rising alternative therapy: homeopathy.

Homeopathy

About 10 years, the National Institutes of Health challenged conventional researchers to compare homeopathic medicine to conventional treatments for chronic illness such as allergies and asthma. But it is unfortunate that conventional researchers do not take homeopathy serious, and not many studies have been conducted. A lot of conventional doctors simply have the mindset that homeopathy doesn't work because it can't work.

How homeopathic allergy remedies works is that small amounts of allergenic substances are dissolved in water. The solution is then diluted until all the molecules of the original allergenic substances are dissolved. The resulting "remedy" is then used to desensitize patients to the allergens via its effect on the whole body through a local injection.

Although conventional doctors are skeptical of homeopathy, there is no denying that homeopathy is becoming increasingly popular in many nations, including the USA.
Since there is little risk in taking such diluted remedies, some conventionally trained physicians are willing to entertain the notion that it might help.

Here are the results of some recent studies on the usefulness of homeopathy in treating allergic rhinitis and asthma.

- In California, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 32 patients with allergic rhinitis was conducted. Fifty percent of the patients were treated with a homeopathic nasal gel (Zicam Allergy Relief) containing Luffa operculata, Galphimia glauca, Histmainum hydrochlorium, and Sulfur. The 50% of the patients were treated with a placebo nasal gel. (a placebo is a fake medication, but the patients do not know that it is fake.) The results here were positive: the Zicam-treated group's symptoms improved 52 percent compared with a 19 percent improvement in the group treated with placebos.

- In England, another double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted. This time, 50 patients with allergic rhinitis were treated. Half of the patients were given an oral homeopathic remedy containing a dilution of dust mite, tree pollen, and cat dander, while the other half were again treated with placebo pills. The researchers concluded from this study that the homeopathic remedy cleared up the patient’s stuffy schnozzles as effectively as steroid sprays.

Although more scientific studies have yet to be done for conventional therapies to fully accept homeopathy treatments, there is no doubt that homeopathy treatments are gaining ground to other treatments as natural allergy cures.
